MonkeyTURN

At times, he’s an ally of justice. At times, he’s the devil’s tool. Good or bad, it depends on the remote control.
Toriro MIKI – Gigantor’s theme, 1963

Sarumawashi — the monkey and its master — is a traditional form of Japanese street performance in which monkeys dressed in human clothes are presented in public space.

This practice inspired NAO in the creation of MonkeyTURN. The manipulated monkey and its master became a way to think about contemporary humans, whose behaviours and emotions are increasingly conditioned by the information circulating through computer networks.

But who is manipulating them?

MonkeyTURN is an installation and performance project based on a dynamic mapping system: a projection onto a moving surface, in this case the body of a cable-controlled robot. The fragments of images projected onto this neutral material surface describe what could be called new digital identities. In other words, a reality undermined by unreality.

The robot is animated by servo motors, whose noise gradually produces a musical space.

MonkeyTURN was born from a reflection on the human and its double, the human and its social representation, with one question left suspended: what if we were only monkeys manipulated by ourselves?
