StraitJacketWorkers

Thanks to this restriction, I can fly.
Thanks to this sadness, I can soar very high.
Thanks to this adversity, I can run.
And thanks to a single tear, I can go the farthest.
Mahatma Gandhi — the poem “Testament,” 1948

SocialJusticeWarrior StraitJacketWorkers is a series of robots included in an installation related to the notion of social construction. Each mini-robot, or WORKER, has only one type of interaction, corresponding to one simple action. These small robots obtain their true meaning only when they are integrated into another installation or performance project.

Each WORKER must conform to the following rules:

I. A WORKER must not be made with a 3D printer.

As in old films about genius scientists, true inventions must be made with everyday equipment. Industrial objects already possess beautiful forms shaped by function and necessity. By searching through nearby shops, one should not “create,” but “combine.”

II. A WORKER must have a job and a nickname.

In order to have a clear meaning within the installation, each WORKER must correspond to a social position in the real world. This allows for a variety of interactions.

III. A WORKER must fight against everyone.

The WORKERs are not presented alone as art objects, but are integrated into installation or performance projects. Like a game controller that can be used for different types of video games, they must be able to correspond to multiple digital interfaces.

The Three Laws of the WORKERs

I: Un WORKER ne doit pas être fait par une imprimante 3D;

II: Un WORKER doit avoir un job et un surnom;

III: Et un WORKER doit se battre contre tous;
