NAO is a Japan-born ARTIST-INVANDOR based in France and active internationally. Using robots he designs himself, he creates performances in which sound, image, and bodily movement interact with each other. For NAO, robots are neither tools for talking about the future nor slaves made to serve humans. In developing them, he places at the center of his method yokai — a form of Japanese folk thought that gives names and forms to phenomena and relationships. In this way, his robots do not seek to showcase the capabilities of AI or robotics, but appear instead as abstract beings that express the roles and individual identities given to people in contemporary society. In his works, the actions of the performer and the relationships between robots transform sound and image in real time, and the whole stage functions as a single compositional structure. Through interaction, sound and image give shape to relationships and structures, forming a rhythmic space marked by techno-noise. Through this practice, NAO explores forms of coexistence between humans and robots.
